How is it possible that my little baby boy is six years old already? I know it's cliché, but they really do grow up extraordinarily fast. One day, none of them will need me anymore as they'll be leading lives of their own, and hopefully doing a better job of it than I've done with mine.

Christ I feel old.

We got back from Italy on the 29th, and we had just enough time to get Bean's birthday gift sorted...something we'd been looking into for several weeks but just hadn't got around to actually planning, and then of course having the blasted thing created. It was worth it, though, because when Bean saw the little koi pond out in the far corner of the back garden, I didn't think he'd ever stop smiling. It's a damn good thing we've got house elves, because maintaining the climate charms around it is going to be quite the job.

Speaking of jobs...while I've no doubt that Draco appreciated the time away from Widdleton, and Hermione's help in keeping things sorted and bills paid while we were away, I wonder if he might be regretting the length of our holiday at the moment. He seems rather, erm, overwhelmed. I suggested that he might want to look into perhaps taking on an assistant, and all that I got in return was a withering look and the distinct muttering of the name Nikoli Gavrik.

So no assistant, then.

And we know precious little about that situation, as things seem to be in limbo, as they say, but he is still in Ministry custody. As for Nott......well, we're told they have 'a few reliable leads on his whereabouts' but that's all.

Why did I ever think that running from a madman would be over when Voldemort was finally killed?

Draco's birthday...Collapse )

This past week has been...surreal.

If we had any ideas about the Maxwell situation being sorted quickly, clearly we were wrong. There's a certain event happening at the moment involving the Muggle government that has taken up most of the Ministry's time of late. This means that nothing at all has happened with Maxwell, aside from a rather exhausting interrogation (or so I'm told) the night that Kingsley took him into custody. Once this Jubilee business is over, Nott goes back to being Undesirable Number One and top priority.

We've been advised to be "extra cautious" until then - as if we haven't lived our entire lives that way and somehow needed reminding.

As for Draco and I... well, to say that I'd bollocksed everything up but good would be the understatement of the century. Our anniversary passed yesterday with nary a celebratory shag. Suppose that I should be grateful that I even got a kiss. I'm at a bit of a loss, really. We've never had an anniversary before where we weren't, well, together. And his birthday is in a few days, and I've no idea what to do or if I should just...not do anything. I don't know what's right or wrong anymore. I don't know what will upset him or make him happy.

I ended up wasting time at the Widdleton gardens today to try and take my mind off things. We really need to start on the last of the exterior renovations. I suppose we should have aimed to have them completed before the fundraiser, but now I'm not even sure if that's going to happen.

Draco has finally found time this week go through a lot of the (shoddily kept) older records at Widdleton in order to put together proper histories on all of the children currently in residence, and found out something about Dora that made her reaction to the news about the Emersons make a lot of sense. In short, it wasn't her first time nearly being adopted.

Just a few months before Draco purchased the orphanage, Dora was at the top of the list to be adopted by another couple who backed out at the last minute. How much she remembers of that, I'm not certain, but I can't help but wonder. There was no explanation that Draco could find for why this other couple suddenly halted the process, either. We've asked some of the staff who were here then, but none of them know. I suppose that we could always track down some of the staff who are no longer here, but what difference would it make? In the end, you're still left with a little girl whose confidence has been shattered not once, but twice.

What we know with certainty is that for the foreseeable future, there will be no adoptions from Widdleton.

Tonight is the full moon, and an unusual one at that... the so-called supermoon, where it passes closer to Earth than usual. Remus said that those transformations are usually a little more, er, robust was the word that he used. I offered to be there, but Sirius and Remus said not to worry. Still, I plan on being there in the morning just to make sure that Liam is alright. Maybe I'll pop round extra early and have breakfast waiting for them.

Summer is nearly here, and Draco and I are coming up with a few ideas to keep the kids - including Widdleton's - occupied. I can't wait to see Lucas, Thomas, Jack, and Daisy. Even over Christmas hols, they looked different. I don't remember changing that much over the course of a year, but I suppose we all did. We'll need to talk to Thomas and Daisy especially about their plans for after Hogwarts. Daisy will be entering her final year, and Thomas will be a sixth year. We need to make sure that they know we will continue to take care of them and support them financially and otherwise until they can stand on their own two feet.

I suppose it will be good practice for when our own kids reach that age.

I never saw it coming. There were no clues, no hints...I never saw the slightest bit of hesitation on their part.

The Emersons have backed out of their commitment to adopt Dora.

She was supposed to have her first overnight stay with them this weekend. We were going to tell the Emersons that we wanted them to take her home at the end of this month. We had the contract already drawn up and finalised, just waiting for signatures.

Now we have a little girl wondering why the nice people who were going to take her home to live with them - the ones who told her how much they cared for her and wanted to make her happy - don't want her anymore. And it's not just Dora that needs an explanation, it's all of the children at Widdleton.

I hardly knew what to say when they told us. Mrs Emerson is pregnant, apparently. They've known for a while, but because of her history with miscarriage, they didn't want anyone to know and weren't really expecting her to make it to her second trimester, but apparently she has. And they can't financially support two children.

Draco is livid. He swears to slam the door in the face of anyone coming here looking to adopt. I knew just how angry he was when he got up and walked out of the middle of our meeting. Draco in a rage is bad enough, but Draco in a rage and speechless is...a whole other sort of danger.

The thing is, I can't bring myself to be all that angry at them. I'm sad for Dora, of course I am, but I imagine that it was likely very difficult for them to tell us that they had to back out, and that they feel guilty about it as well. We know the state of their finances, and it would be a struggle for the Emersons to support two children. I understand that.

But how is that little girl going to understand?

We think that Dora is very nearly ready to go home with the Emersons. It's only a matter of weeks now. Yesterday, she went with them for the day. Without us. They took her to the London Zoo, and had a meal near Piccadilly. They said that she did really well, and our own conversation with her last night when we tucked her into bed only confirmed it. She likes them, and they clearly adore her. Yes, it's only a matter of time now. I suspect that Dora will no longer be part of our family by the end of April.

I've seriously contemplated asking the Emersons if they'd like to take Morty as well - make it a package deal of sorts. Two for the price of one. His desire to bite things and people has only worsened, and I'm at a loss. It's all fun and games until someone bleeds, and while Draco may want to brush it off as no big deal, I didn't particularly find it funny when I had to heal his shoulder after Morty bit him while Draco was carting him around on his back. I found him biting the arms of his stuffed animals just the other day, and when I asked him why he was doing it, the answer I got was because they were his. So far he hasn't bitten his siblings, but if he does...

We're getting things ready at Widdleton for Easter next weekend. Draco thought that it would be fun for the kids if we took advantage of the spacious grounds by holding an Easter egg hunt. Even the older kids who are coming home from Hogwarts seem to be excited about it. I'm excited to see them - especially Jack. He's seemed a bit homesick lately, and I want to spend some time with him and see if everything is okay. Lucas, Thomas, and Daisy will be staying at school - Thomas and Daisy have their O.W.L.S. coming up, and they wouldn't get any studying done at Widdleton. Apparently Lucas is staying behind because there's a girl he fancies who is also staying behind. Merlin help us if we have to have that particular talk with a third year.

Come to think of it, I don't know if any of the older kids have been, er, talked to about that stuff...

One problem with living in an area that is part Muggle and part Magic is that sometimes you have to deal with an overabundance of Magical pests that are drawn to the wizarding areas of town...like Doxies or Bundimuns...

...but also Boggarts. And today there were three in Draco's potions lab. He went down there after breakfast to replenish our stock of Pepper-Up for Widdleton, and not ten minutes later he came upstairs, white as snow and rather shaken.

He won't say what he saw, and I won't ask.

I went downstairs to deal with them, and to make sure they were all gone. Nasty things, Boggarts.

We were originally going to go to Widdleton in the afternoon, but after that bit of unpleasantness (and my suspicions on what Draco saw), we decided to have a lazy day at home just watching telly and indulging in a nap before dinner.

Well, the kids napped. Draco and I did...something else first, and then napped. After dinner, the kids ran around the back garden, lost in their own little world, while Draco and I sat and watched (and sometimes played referee) with a lovely plate of cakes and a hot pot of tea between us.

We can deal with the outside world tomorrow.

Draco and I made a deal this year about Valentine's Day...we've both been extraordinarily busy, what with crucial members of Widdleton staff being absent (and thankfully all but Nicholas have returned), and what we really needed was a day to ourselves. But as staff started to return, my load lightened considerably yet Draco's did not.

So I took over.Collapse )

It seems strange to miss someone when they live with you, but when things are so hectic that you barely have time for a 'hello, good morning' or 'how was your day,' it's actually possible.

We're down three staff members at Widdleton. Mary, who is the nanny for all the under fives, has been out with a sore throat...Nicholas, who handles all of the odd jobs and maintenance (and used to live at Widdleton until they found out he had a grandmother in Wales who took him in at age fifteen) is away tending to his sick gran, and to top it all off, it seems that Arthur has come down with pneumonia, and so Molly has been absent from Widdleton for over a week now. That's left me to take on all of their duties, on top of the ones I already have, and I find myself rather...lacking in stamina at the end of the day. I mean, the rest are chipping in but they're already busy with their normal routine so...and of course, Draco does what he can but he spends a lot of the time handling the teaching and all of the administrative day-to-day minutia.

It also means our children have had to be with us at Widdleton all day, and while they've had great fun playing with the other kids but we are reluctant to let them form any particularly strong bonds, for obvious reasons.

And speaking of those reasons, it seems the Emersons are starting to grow impatient but Dora simply isn't ready and we won't push her beyond what we feel is comfortable and safe for the girl. It's a bit like walking a tightrope at the moment.

But mostly...mostly I just miss my husband, and am looking forward to a nice, quiet evening at home.

And, of course, this coming Tuesday is Valentine's Day, and who knows what - if anything - we'll have the time or energy for.

Time:8:58 pm.
Well. Tonight was...interesting.

We hosted the Emersons for dinner - a somewhat private affair with us, the children, and Dora. They've chosen to adopt her, and as we agreed at the start of all this, we wouldn't sign off on any adoption until the child got to know the prospective parents and felt comfortable. Dora being particularly shy, and also being smart enough at age four that she knows what's going on, we thought that this would be a particularly slow process that might take us through spring.

Halfway through the main course during a somewhat uncomfortable lull in the conversation, Draco was about to speak when Bean - our Bean - said to Dora, "My Daddy and Papa won't make anyone go where they don't want to go."

Dora then quietly asked the Emersons if they were to be her new parents. She is shy, but she's also very honest about how she feels if asked. She's been at Widdleton since before she can remember, and she's seen a handful of children come and go from the orphanage.

We hadn't yet thought it necessary to sit down with Dora and explain things fully. That would have been our next step, but it seems that decision was ripped out like a rug from under our feet tonight.

No one knew what to say. The silence was deafening - even Morty and Oscar seemed to sense that something wasn't right because they, too, were quiet. Mrs Emerson then spoke up and, very nicely and gently, told Dora that they would very much like it if they could get to know one another, and that they'd be honoured to have a daughter like her. Dora just shrugged, looking a bit self-conscious, and was quiet through most of the meal. She perked up a bit during dessert when Emmy promised to plait her hair with lots of ribbons, but...

After the Emersons left (and with the agreement that they would return on Sunday), Draco and I sent our children off with Joanne to join the others for reading time, and spoke to Dora a little bit while getting her ready for bed. We explained as well as we could that Bean was right - we wouldn't send her anywhere she didn't want to go, but that maybe if she grew to like the Emersons, she wouldn't mind staying with them.

Bean told me when we got home that he could feel her sadness and that she felt like we don't want her anymore. I knew that this was likely going to come up, but I'm not at all prepared for it.
